In the Texas heat just west of Houston, a new factory has been born in less than many people thought reasonable. Within a mere sixteen months, Tesla’s newest Megafactory in Brookshire has transformed an empty construction site in a fully functional energy storage facility to produce the Megapack 3, first units are now being shipped. Each Megapack 3 can provide approximately five megawatt hours (MWh), approximately 28 percent more storage capacity than the earlier generation for the same amount of space. The increased capacity mainly results from bigger 2.
8 liter cells, and a new thermal system which comes 78 percent less connection points. Less points for connections equal fewer places for leaks and less maintenance as well as easier, faster installation. For utilities and project developers the practical conclusions are that they get more energy storage and less install and maintenance time.
Tesla built the Brookshire plant just for this product. It plans to produce 50 gigawatt-hours of Megapack 3 a year. That makes it only the third major gigafactory after the original Megafactory in Lathrop, California, and the Shanghai gigafactory to produce big batteries at scale. Demand for high-capacity batteries has been outpacing Tesla’s car business Lately, as grids struggle to accommodate more renewable power and the growth of data centers accelerates.
The new factory is Tesla’s answer to both these pressures and to rising competition from other battery companies. The other new addition is the Megablock, which will be able to be factory integrated with transformers and switchgear by the company into one 20MWh package that could arrive at the site ready to be interconnected, with four of the new Megapacks. This will be the 3rd generation of the Megapacks.
Company stated that this minimizes demountion installation time and building costs than the previous designs which needed more time in the field. The project in Texas is noteworthy. Final approval was announced in early 2025. Just over a year and a half later the factory is making batteries. Elon Musk publicly congratulated his Megapack team the day the first units appeared. Plans for local employment will generate hundreds of jobs over this year, eventually approaching 1,500 jobs as the factory matures. For the energy industry the timing is useful.
Many areas still depend on aging peaker plants run by the grid that only come online when demand increases. Sizable battery packs will be able to replace some of that capacity, storing inexpensive daytime solar or off-peak wind power that can be sold later when prices increase or renewables slack off. A more compact, more dependable Megapack that arrives sooner will make those projects far more feasible to finance and develop. Tesla has said many times that batteries are just as crucial a part of the transition from fossil fuels as electric cars.
The Brookshire Megafactory opening and Megapack 3 production launch have finally confirmed that. The batteries rolling off the line in Texas are for projects ranging from balancing grids and renewable farms to preventing outages at peak hours. After years of booming demand and scarce supply, the automaker now has significant new capacity at a time when such back-up storage is needed in the market.
