Jennifer Lawrence Set to Lead Zach Cregger’s Sci-Fi Thriller The Flood

Jennifer Lawrence returns to sci-fi this time, the Oscar winner will collaborate with one of Hollywood’s most buzzworthy genre masters. Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to co-star in The Flood, a new sci-fi thriller penned by Zach Cregger (Barbarian Weapons the upcoming Resident Evil). The project that marks the reunion between one of Hollywood’s preeminent young stars and a director known for genre-bending thrillers.

The Flood is scheduled to start shooting in the coming months. Warner Bros. And New Line Cinema are collaborating on the project, while Amblin Entertainment also has a hand in the production. Cregger is attached to write and direct the project as well as produce “The Flood” based on his own original concept. The film has an August 11, 2028 release date.

There has been very little of the official story so far, which will only serve to make this project even more enticing for the fans. Cregger has hinted at being stuck in space and the fears that come while exploring the unknown. An early description of the story has mentioned a deep-space captain and her crew searching for a strange signal from a distant planet, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

Cregger too has indicated that The Flood will stand apart from his oeuvre. While his previous films have borne the hallmarks of horror and a sharpening sense of dread, he refers to his latest project as a cerebral science-fiction epic, not necessarily a horror film. He’s cited other films, even Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a source of inspiration for integrating science-fiction with bizarre questions surrounding mankind and computers.

The film for Jennifer Lawrence rounds off a return to a genre, which has played a significant part in her career. Appearing as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series secured her worldwide fame and she later starred in the science-fiction drama Passengers. For Lawrence then the Flood project is a further chance to sink her teeth into a role that exists in a world much different from our own.

Lawrence’s career is about to get even busier. She made her return earlier this year in Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love and will return as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, plus being attached to Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night.

Cregger also of course worked with New Line of The Flood afterWeapons. The Flood is yet another collaboration withNew Line, and Cregger’s career has snowballed since Barbarian first revealed himself to be a talented voice in genre cinema. Weapons only continued to strengthen that status, but Resident Evil saw the director working within an existing franchise.

But what makes it more intriguing is that both Lawrence and Cregger have written stories about real human feelings in strange and intense circumstances. Lawrence, who has directed a lot of mega-franchise movies, has that whole narrative of creating mystery around who you are and what you do.
