GoPro has extended its Mission 1 Series with new models that extend the possibilities of what a small, tough camera can do with high-end video stabilization that applies to a greater variety of lenses and shooting scenarios. The series, comprising the Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro and now the Mission 1 Pro ILS, features a larger 50-megapixel one-inch sensor and the company’s lean GP3 processor, which helps create states of the art footage that require less (or any) external gimbal in most instances. At the core is GoPro’s best-suspected stabilization system the new &innovative; HyperSmooth (designed to be exact for this series).
The idea is to produce wonderful, stable video you- after all, who wants shaky footage whether the camera is mounted on a moving vehicle, held over rough terrain, or used with various focal lengths. On the fixed-lens versions this continues a long-standing award-winning tradition for the line, while the new Pro ILS version builds on it, adding inventive stabilization to the Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lenses (including many of the primes). It is as simple as entering the focal length so the system can calibrate itself, although dedicated profiles are provided for some fisheye lenses.
The video is now captured in really high resolution to use the smoother picture to its full potential. Mission 1 Pro and Pro ILS are now 8 K capable with a speed of up to 60 frames per second and 4 K to 240 frames per second with Open Gate modes which utilize the entire sensor area for maximum creative choices in post-production. For extreme slow-motion shooters, there are options for 960 fps in short bursts in 1080p. Previously this was limited to high end cinema package.10-bit color, log recording, and high dynamic range options are also available. Audio is treated just as seriously.
Though it isn’t out of place (in particular in todays market) to have a 4-mic array for stereo and wind mitigation, a 32-bit float to another file ensures digital clipping isn’t an issue. Small, is a theme that will be crucial for this camera the Pro ILS is less than 200grams and easily mounted in spaces too cramped for bigger cameras, or onto drones or vehicles where weight, size and snagging issues would hinder normal cinema equipment. Waterproofing and the camera’s hard rugged case keep the spirit of Go Pro alive.
The Mission 1 Pro ILS was announced for pre-order in late August and will start shipping to customers and retailers in early September at 699.99 dollars (599.99 dollars for existing GoPro users).
Lenses are sold separately. Alongside the ILS, a free companion monitoring app for iPhone & iPad is released with features like focus peaking, LUT previews and zebra patterns which assist operators in composing their shots more accurately when filming with manual-focus lenses. The Mission 1 Series is the right choice for creators that require quality stabilisation without sacrificing size and weight.
